Burma crisis: an addendum
From the Global Refuge website:

According to GRI's partners inside Burma, the death total has already hit 100,000 but could be as high as 250,000. This is a more realistic estimate than the official number of 40,000 dead released by the junta government, especially since very little lifesaving aid has reached the people of Burma. Oxfam believes the number could rise to 1.5 million if no aid is allowed into the country...the people of Burma have gathered into more than 700 camps in Yangon and left to cope alone without government help. There is no good drinking water and very limited food available in the camps...
-------------------------------
An update from my friend, who is currently in Bangkok:
  • All NGO and UN agencies have been put on delay for visas, and 9 out of every 10 visas are being rejected;
  • GRI is currently moving supplies overland through Thailand into Burma by trucks;
  • Airlift of supplies will begin this week;
  • GRI is one of only two groups granted access to the delta areas, and they are assuming a leadership position in the Logistics cluster with WFP; other agencies such as IMC, Operation USA and IRC are offering resources but GRI is covering transportation and distribution due to their access to the delta areas.
Once again, if you want to give money, please think about helping out GRI  - they have people and access within Burma. Most other agencies have resources, but not the kind of distribution network that GRI has.

It's really a struggle to decide which agency to donate to because who wants your donations to go into some general's larder? That thought is making me hold back and I am seeking some assurance that the supplies will go through to the people.

Then of course you have the usual opportunists seeking a piece of the pie. How do you separate these idiots from the bona fide agencies?

But eventually we all need to decide, based on the information available to us.

Like you said, it's really up to you to decide. However, most news agencies only cover the better-known relief organizations who might not necessarily be the best or the most experienced in this particular emergency. Those better-known relief organizations (especially the faith-based ones) have pretty enormous budgets, and swoop from disaster to disaster, usually with hardly any knowledge of the local context.

I don't know what kind of assurance you are seeking but in my opinion (based on some other information that I can't reproduce here) GRI is doing a good job getting supplies to the Burmese people.

What kind of assurance? Good question. I was looking for field reports although on hindsight, that's not going to be possible given how the army and police are throwing out foreign aid workers. I avoid faith-based agencies too and prefer to donate to those that have specific expertise in relief effort (e.g. food distribution; medical).

I know what's not reassuring. Anything that involves the Myanmar authorities is not reassuring in my book, like this:

SINGAPORE'S Ambassador to Myanmar Robert Chua on Wednesday handed over to Myanmar authorities the first tranche of a S$100,000 humanitarian assistance package contributed by the Khoo Teck Puat Foundation.

Anyway, thanks for the "recommendation". Given your experience you can probably better tell which agencies are worthy of support, since most of us have very little reliable information to depend on. I will donate to GRI.

Oh dear. Yeah, that's probably NOT the best way to assist the victims. The Khoo Teck Puat Foundation (I don't know anything about this foundation) should have a better monitoring and evaluation system in place...

Hi, I happened to come across your blog while reading someone else's plea to help the people in Myanmar. Could I link your blog so that more people can know about GRI? I think a lot of us are not quite willing to donate because we're not sure if the aid will reach the victims. Hopefully this will help. Thanks!

Hi Kaiying, go ahead and link - but also look at mrsbudak's blog (above commenter) for more ideas and a more thorough discussion on the ethics of where the money is going to...I'm only giving a personal viewpoint.
